Sensor and Image Quality

  • Pixel Design and Image Detail: Both cameras are equipped with a 19.9MP Super 35 global shutter CMOS sensor. However, the RED KOMODO-X features a newly designed sensor with an updated pixel design, which improves the details and colors in the shadow areas. It performs better in terms of color reproduction and detail display in the dark parts compared to the RED KOMODO.
  • Dynamic Range: The RED KOMODO claims an official dynamic range of 16 stops, while the RED KOMODO-X officially has a dynamic range exceeding 16.5 stops. In actual shooting, the KOMODO-X shows better performance in retaining details in highlights and shadows.
  • Frame Rate: The RED KOMODO supports video recording at 6K/40P, 5K/48P, 4K/60P, and 2K/120P. In contrast, the RED KOMODO-X significantly boosts the frame rate to 6K/80P and 4K/120P, and it also has higher frame rates at 5K and 2K resolutions, with the maximum reaching 96fps and 240fps respectively, enabling it to capture fast-moving scenes more effectively.

Interfaces

  • Richness: The RED KOMODO requires an external I/O module. The RED KOMODO-X, while maintaining its compact form factor, retains the 12G-SDI interface, 9-pin EXT interface, and headphone interface. Meanwhile, it adds a USB-C interface and a 5-pin audio interface. Through adapters, it can be expanded to dual XLR or 3.5mm audio modules, making it more convenient and professional for monitoring, cabling, power supply, and connection with other equipment.
  • Network Function: The USB Type-C port of the RED KOMODO-X has a transmission speed of 5Gbps, allowing for uploading and downloading via FTPS. It is compatible with RedConnect, enabling real-time RAW transmission. It also supports RedControl and RedControl Pro for control. In contrast, the RED KOMODO does not possess these network transmission capabilities.

Mount

  • Stability: The RED KOMODO-X adopts an RF mount with a locking structure, the same as that of the V-Raptor. Compared to the RF mount of the RED KOMODO, it is more sturdy and durable, eliminating the issue of mount wobble and ensuring better stability in the connection between the lens and the camera body.
  • Compatibility: The RED KOMODO-X can be connected to an RF-PL adapter, supporting traditional cinema lenses. It can also use electronic ND filters with accessories. Although the RED KOMODO also supports Canon RF mount lenses, it is relatively limited in terms of adapting traditional cinema lenses and using electronic ND filters.

Storage

  • Memory Card Type: The RED KOMODO uses Cfast 2.0 storage cards, while the RED KOMODO-X employs CFexpress Type-B storage cards. The CFexpress Type-B card has a higher capacity, longer operating time, and a transmission speed three times faster than traditional Cfast cards, better meeting the requirements for high-frame-rate and high-resolution video recording.

Power Supply

  • Battery Interface: The RED KOMODO features dual BP battery interfaces, while the RED KOMODO-X has been replaced with a more professional Micro V-Lock battery interface, allowing for more efficient and higher-capacity battery options. It also reserves an M4 mounting screw hole, enabling the expansion to more standard V-mount batteries in the future. Additionally, the KOMODO-X body is designed with a 6-pin DC input, allowing it to be directly powered by a RED 11-17V DC power supply.

Body and Operation

  • Size and Weight: The RED KOMODO-X weighs 1.18kg/2.62lbs alone, with external dimensions of 129.37×101.26×95.26mm/5.1x4x3.8in. The RED KOMODO weighs 952.5g and is slightly smaller in size than the KOMODO-X. Overall, there is not a significant difference in size and weight between the two, and both belong to the category of compact and lightweight cameras.
  • Operation Convenience: The RED KOMODO-X can be controlled via the touch screen using the RED original DSMC3 REDTouch, which is more user-friendly for shoulder-mounted shooting. In contrast, the RED KOMODO may require more reliance on external devices for control, such as remote control via mobile phones.
